About Parliamentary Groups
A Parliamentary Group consists of party members representing their party in the Knesset. The work of the Knesset is conducted on a group basis, including legislation initiatives, meetings of Knesset Committees, plenum debates etc. Parliamentary Groups may use their parties' names in Knesset Elections.
More than one political party can join together to form a single Parliamentary group in the Knesset. Large parliamentary groups appoint one of their members to the position of whip, whose main duty is to make sure that enough members of the group participate in the voting sessions in the plenum so as to secure a majority.
Members of Parliamentary Groups must abide by predetermined rules of discipline in order to facilitate the effectiveness of the group`s activities. Parliamentary Groups conduct their meetings at least once in a week. The meetings` decisions are obligatory for all the group`s members. Discipline disobedience usually leads to a situation that might cause a temporary removal of a Knesset Member that broke the rules, or might even cause a split the group.
In case of Parliamentary Group splitting up, the biggest group of Knesset Members formed as a result of a split is entitled to keep the parliamentary group`s name. The House Committee is in charge of approving any changes concerning the members of the Groups as well as Parliamentary Group names. The House Committee informs the Speaker of the Knesset about the approved changes. Knesset`s Accountant regulates the expense budget of the new group in accordance with the Speaker`s Notice.
